Steven Salaita, qui est Palestinien, a été licencié de sa position de maître de conférences dans le programme d'American Indian Studies de l’université d’Illinois à Urbana-Champaign (IUIC) en raison de ses positions diffamatoires et pour certaines formulées en langage vulgaire sur la campagne militaire d'Israël à Gaza relayées par Twitter. Le 20 juin, lorsque trois adolescents israéliens furent enlevés et tués il écrivit: "Vous êtes peut-être trop raffinés pour le dire, mais moi pas: j'espère que tous les (juron) habitants des implantations en Cisjordanie disparaîtront." Le 22 juillet: "#Israel tue des civils plus rapidement que la vitesse du 4G."

Par ailleurs, on peut se poser des questions sur le niveau de ses compétences académiques.  Steve Salaita est l'auteur d'un ouvrage intitulé L'âme morte d'Israël (Israel's Dead Soul) où il n'hésite pas à écrire:

"Les Palestiniens sont bien conscients que chaque fois que l'un d'eux entre ou sort d'Israël, indépendamment de sa nationalité, il ou elle devra probablement subir un examen anal ou vaginal. Ces examens ... n'ont pas de fonction pragmatique. Ce sont des actes de domination psychologique et d'affirmation autoritaire.  Les agents de ces actions coercitives donnent ainsi libre expression à leur propre dépravation par l'accomplissement de leurs notions orientalistes de la sexualité arabe et musulmane".

Dirigeant kurde: "Nous avons construit une société démocratique et laïque. Qu'est-ce que les Palestiniens ont construit?"

"Comparez-nous à d'autres mouvements de libération dans le monde. Nous sommes très matures. Nous n'avons pas recours à la terreur. Nous ne tolérons pas des thèses nationalistes extrémistes qui ne peuvent que nuire à notre peuple. S'il vous plaît comparez ce que nous avons accompli dans les régions sous l' autorité nationale du Kurdistan avec ce que fait l'autorité nationale palestinienne. ... Au cours des 10 dernières années nous avons construit une société démocratique et laïque, une société civile. Qu'est-ce que les Palestiniens ont construit?" "This thought is prompted by something a pair of Iraqi Kurdish leaders once told me. Iraqi Kurdistan is today on the cusp of independence. Like the Palestinians, the Kurds deserve a state. Unlike most of the Palestinian leadership, the Kurds have played a long and clever game to bring them to freedom.

This is what Barham Salih, the former prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, told me years ago: “Compare us to other liberation movements around the world. We are very mature. We don’t engage in terror. We don’t condone extremist nationalist notions that can only burden our people. Please compare what we have achieved in the Kurdistan national-authority areas to the Palestinian national authority. … We have spent the last 10 years building a secular, democratic society, a civil society.” What, he asked, have the Palestinians built?"

So too, Massoud Barzani, the president of the Kurdistan Regional Government, once told me this: “We had the opportunity to use terrorism against Baghdad. We chose not to.”

In 2005, the Palestinians of Gaza, free from their Israeli occupiers, could have taken a lesson from the Kurds—and from David Ben-Gurion, the principal Israeli state-builder—and created the necessary infrastructure for eventual freedom. Gaza is centrally located between two large economies, those of Israel and Egypt. Europe is just across the Mediterranean. Gaza could have easily attracted untold billions in economic aid...."

Une fois de plus la France et l'Allemagne n'ont pas défendu Israël à l'ONU

Manifestation pro-Hamas à Paris

Malgré les belles déclarations de François Hollande et de Manuel Valls, une fois de plus la France (ni l'Allemagne) ont défendu Israël lors du vote qualifié par Benjamin Weinthal de "scandaleusement unilatérale" du Conseil des droits de l'homme de l'ONU du 23 juillet 2014 décidant "d'envoyer d'urgence une commission d'enquête internationale indépendante afin d'enquêter sur toutes les violations du droit international humanitaire et du droit international dans le domaine des droits de l'homme dans le territoire palestinien occupé, y compris Jérusalem-Est, en particulier dans la bande de Gaza occupée, dans le cadre des opérations militaires menées depuis le 13 juin 2014."  Cette décision est particulièrement cynique compte tenu de la situation dans la région.  Mais faut-il vraiment s'étonner?  JSS vient de poster ceci: Pour Laurent Fabius, inaugurer un place qatarien à Paris est plus important que de parler des chrétiens d’Irak.

Les pays européens suivants se sont abstenus, au lieu de voter contre comme les États-Unis: Allemagne, Autriche, Estonie, Ex-République yougoslave de Macédoine, France, Irlande, Italie, Monténégro, République tchèque, Roumanie et Royaume Uni.

The large communities of European Muslims are playing a crucial role in the violence. The Jerusalem Post’s headline “Islamists, neo-Nazis declare: ‘You Jews are Beasts’” captured the alliance at one protest in Frankfurt.

Absent a wholesale change, the continent’s Jews are left with three options: Make aliyah to Israel, form self-defense groups or emigrate to the United States."

Conflict in Gaza: asymmetries and proportionalities, par Laurie Blank

"News reports of civilians killed or wounded in the course of combat in Gaza tell us of tragedy and loss. They tell us of the horrors of urban warfare and the challenges of fighting against a terrorist group bent on using the civilian population as a shield for its operatives, rocket launchers and weapons caches. They tell us that we must be more vigilant in condemning and holding accountable those who exploit civilians for tactical and strategic advantage. They tell us that commanders launching attacks must fulfill all obligations to minimize civilian harm and be held accountable when they do not. But numbers of casualties alone do not provide answers about proportionality or legality — you need both law and all the facts, not just numbers, to do that."

Blank is clinical professor of law and director of the International Humanitarian Law Clinic at the Emory University School of Law.

The conflict in Gaza is replete with asymmetries: the number of civilian casualties on either side, the amount of destruction, the types of weapons used and technological capabilities of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hamas, or the resources poured into shelter and defense of civilians from attacks.

But asymmetric is not synonymous with disproportionate. When we talk of asymmetries, we compare facts to measure the effects or capabilities of the two sides — the IDF has precision-guided munitions whereas Hamas has rockets that cannot be aimed with any discrimination or precision; hundreds of Palestinian civilians and militants have died while a few Israeli civilians and 40-plus Israeli soldiers have died.

Proportionality, however, is a legal term with a specific legal meaning. It is one of a set of fundamental legal obligations that helps to minimize suffering during wartime. The principle of proportionality forbids attacks in which the expected civilian casualties from the attack will be excessive in relation to the anticipated military advantage gained.

Any analysis of proportionality during conflict thus rests on several key concepts. First, proportionality applies to attacks on lawful military targets that pose a risk of incidental civilian harm. The principle of proportionality seeks to enhance protections for civilians — beyond the prohibition on deliberate attacks on civilians — by minimizing the incidental harm that is an unfortunate but inevitable result of military action.

Second, the principle of proportionality accepts that not all civilian deaths during war are unlawful. The law recognizes the complexity and fluidity of the operational environment — including the location and movement of both enemy personnel and civilians, weather, terrain, capability of weapons and personnel, enemy tactics and conduct, for example — and seeks to minimize civilian harm while accepting that such harm cannot be eliminated altogether.

Jimmy Carter rejette le boycott d'Israël même dans les implantations

Sans doute Jimmy Carter a-t-il compris à quel point l'antisémitisme, sous le déguisement d'antisionisme, d'antiisraélisme, de boycotts etc, se propage en Europe.  Mieux vaut tard que jamais.  Comme l'a dit l'intellectuel américain Paul Berman: "Les comparaisons d'Israël à l'apartheid - ou les comparaisons plus radicales et de nos jours plus fréquentes aux nazis - ont fait irruption en Europe de l'Ouest et dans le monde arabe dans les années 1970, et maintenant on les trouve partout".

Jimmy Carter, whose book Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid did more to legitimize the Apartheid smear than anything published by the BDS movement, is now publicly opposed to boycotts against Israel, including boycotts limited to the West Bank.

Carter told the AP this week that he and “The Elders”  – a group former world leaders that includes outspoken Israel critics such as Desmond Tutu, among others – had discussed BDS and decided against it. “We decided not to publicly endorse any kind of embargo, or so forth, against Israeli invasion, or occupying troops in Palestine,” Carter said.

Décès d'Anne Heyman fondatrice de l’école Agahozo Shalom au Rwanda

Anne Heyman, Who Rescued Rwandan Orphans, Dies at 52.  When Anne Heyman learned in 2005 that the genocide inRwanda had orphaned 1.2 million children, she saw a glimpse of salvation for the country in the experience of Israel. “It popped out of my head: They should build youth villages,” she told The New York Times last year. Ms. Heyman, a South African-born lawyer who had given up her legal career in New York to devote herself to philanthropy, was thinking of how Israel, as a new nation state in the late 1940s, had welcomed and cared for tens of thousands of children who had been orphaned by the Holocaust. The Israelis set up residential communities called youth villages to nurture them. “Israel had a solution to the orphan problem,” Ms. Heyman, a supporter of Jewish causes, told The Jerusalem Post last year. “Without a systemic solution, this is a problem that won’t solve itself.” SUITE.

Requiem pour Anne Heyman fondatrice de l’école Agahozo Shalom. Anne Heyman, 52 ans, une américaine qui a fondé au Rwanda l’école Agahozo Shalom de Rwamagana est morte dans un accident de cheval à Palm Beach Equestrian Center en Floride (Sud des USA). Ses funérailles vont se faire ce 3 février au cimetière B’nai Jeshurun dans l’Etat de New York.

La nouvelle de la disparition de Heyman a été un choc pour les Rwandais, surtout les élèves qui ont fréquenté ou suivent encore leurs études dans Agahozo Shalom Youth Village de Rubona du District Rwamagana, en Province de l’Est. Il se dit que certains élèves de l’école ont subi un choc traumatique à l’annonce de la mort de leur bien aimée ‘mère’ surtout que la plupart d’entre eux ont perdu leurs parents au cours du génocide des Tutsi de 1994. [...]

Heyman et son mari Seth Merrin ont eu l’idée de venir au secours des orphelins du génocide dès qu’ils ont été informés de cette triste catastrophe qui s’est abattue au Rwanda en 1994 avec la fondation du Centre Agahozo Shalom pour 12 millions de dollars en 2005.

Au nombre des cours, il y a le counselling pour l’année préparatoire suivie de 3 années de cycle supérieur des Humanités. Le Centre accueille les enfants dépourvus de moyens, la plupart d’entre eux étant des orphelins. Israeli-born Natalie Portman, French husband Benjamin Millepied, and their 2-year-old son, Aleph, are currently in Israel while Portman works on her directorial debut, a film adaptation of Amos Oz’s classic A Tale of Love and Darkness.

While there, Millipied, a dancer and choreographer, has announced his plan to convert to Judaism. In a recent interview he said he feels very connected to Israel, and that becoming Jewish is very important to him.

He also is ready to just be a Jew already! Millepied is “in the middle of the conversion process.” He added that he hopes that the conversion process will “come to an end soon and I will become a Jew.”

The Chinese are connoisseurs of civilization. For thousands of years they have absorbed ethnicities into their own culture, eliminating on occasion tribes that proved too troublesome. They have watched other civilizations come and go; they have seen their younger neighbors adopt parts of their culture and then try to assert their superiority, and ultimately fail. They are the last people on earth to accept the liberal Western dogma that every culture is valid within its own terms of reference, for they have seen too many civilizations fail of their own flaws.

There is no greater compliment to any culture than to be admired by Chinese, who with some justification regard their civilization as the world’s most ancient and, in the long run, most successful. The high regard that the Chinese have for Jews should be a source of pride to the latter. In fact, it is very pleasant indeed for a Jew to spend time in China. The sad history of Jew-hatred has left scars on every European nation, but it is entirely absent in the world’s largest country. On the contrary, to the extent that Chinese people know something of the Jews, their response to us is instinctively sympathetic.

“I am always surprised by the expressions of affection that the Chinese show for the Jews. Both cultures, the Chinese emphasize, share respect for family, learning and, yes, money,” wrote the journalist Clarissa Sebag-Montefiore last year. “Most Chinese will think Jews are smart, clever or good at making money, and that they have achieved a great deal,’ Professor Xu Xin, director of the Institute of Jewish Studies at Nanjing University (one of over half a dozen centers in China dedicated to studying Judaism) told me last week”, she wrote. “This logic — that the Jews are admired for their success despite their small numbers and historical oppression — has also led to a burgeoning industry of self-help books that use Jewish culture and the Talmud to preach business tips.”

Family, learning, respect for tradition, business acumen: these are Jewish traits that the Chinese also consider to be their virtues. All this is true as far as it goes. One might also mention that China never has had reason to view the Jews as competitors for legitimacy.

As an American I can’t imagine a disgusting “comedian” like Dieudonné, who gets laughs from mocking the near-extermination of Europe’s Jews, appealing to any more than a psychologically-damaged fringe of neo-Nazis.

So who (sociologically speaking) are these young French fans of his who have turned out for his performances in their thousands– until his shows were banned on Thursday?  And where are the principled anti-fascists who ought to be confronting and shaming them?  Citing a Wikipedia entry, Dieudonné also claimed that the judge who upheld the ban, Bernard Stirn, was a great-nephew of Capt. Alfred Dreyfus, a French Jewish army officer falsely accused and convicted of spying for Germany in 1894. According to the comedian, the judge’s background alone was enough to explain “why the show [in Nantes] was forbidden.”

Johnny Cash et June Carter Cash étaient de fervents chrétiens et de sincères amis d'Israël et du peuple juif.  Nous ne les oublions pas et leur rendons hommage.

Par calcul les boycotteurs ne prônent pas le boycott des universités américaines

David Hirsh a réagi au soutien apporté au boycott académique d'Israël par l'ASA par l'historienne américaine Claire Potter. Engage a publié un échange de mails entre les deux. Claire Potter a prétendu que c'est en tant qu'Américaine qu'elle y était favorable car  Israël est un rouage important dans la politique étrangère oppressive des Etats-Unis. David Hirsh lui fait remarquer que si l'Amérique est la source du problème, pourquoi donc demande-t-elle que seules des universités israéliennes soient frappées de boycott mais pas les américaines.  Bonne question.  Mais nous connaissons les petits calculs des universitaires boycotteurs... et leur prédilection pour le 2 poids 2 mesures lorsqu'il s'agit d'Israël tout en prenant soin de défendre leurs intérêts propres... Mme Potter ne prône donc pas le boycott des universités américaines.  Une grande conscience!

"When people are first told about the proposal to boycott Israel they tend to ask: “Why do you only propose to boycott Israel?”  Your key answer to this relates not to Israel at all, but to your own American-ness.  You say that Israel is an important element in an oppressive US foreign policy.  If America is the key problem, why do you call upon scholars to boycott Israeli universities without first calling on scholars to boycott American universities?

You mention that there are movements against the Chinese occupation of Tibet on US campuses, and many other movements which are critical of human rights abuses around the world.  But there is a slippage here in your argument.  There is only one campaign to boycott universities.  We are not talking about the politics of who one chooses to criticise, we are talking about the politics of who one singles out for boycott.  This is a key distinction which is often obscured by the BDS movement.  Criticism is not the same as boycott and it is not the same as demonization.  You say that you are critical of the US government so why should you not be critical of the Israeli government?  Well sure, you should be.  But a public organisation like the ASA has to be consistent, it can’t just act on whim or personal taste.  If it discovers criteria which make a boycott of universities appropriate, then shouldn’t it boycott universities in all states which fit the criteria?"

Il devient un génial mathématicien - il invente les principes de base de l’ordinateur – et physicien et a contribué à la mécanique quantique, l’analyse fonctionnelle, la théorie des ensembles, l’informatique – architecture de l’ordinateur -, les sciences économiques, etc. Il participe aussi aux programmes militaires américains. Il travaille sur le projet Manhattan – il assiste à des essais sur la bombe A dans l’océan Pacifique -, et au développement de la bombe H. Anticommuniste, il est consultant pour la CIA et la Rand Corporation, et contribue à élaborer la guerre froide et la destruction mutuelle assurée (Mutually Assured Destruction, MAD).

Le gouvernement américain garde la définition d'antisémitisme supprimée par l'Europe

JForum: La définition de travail de l’antisémitisme a, purement et simplement, été supprimée, en tant que document officiel, ouvrant ainsi toutes grandes les portes aux antisémites et aux ennemis d’Israël, pour qu’ils puissent discréditer et délégitimer jusqu’aux racines de la lutte contre toute forme d’antisémitisme.  Cette définition européenne a, à l’origine, été publiée en 2005, par le Centre d’Observation du Racisme et de la Xénophobie en Europe, qui a ensuite été remplacée par l’organisation qui lui a succédé: l’Agence des Droits Fondamentaux (ADF ou FRA en anglais). La définition de l’antisémitisme, de manière ostensible, n’est plus intégrée sur le site internet de l’ ADF ou FRA."

Selon Wikipédia (version en anglais, rien dans la version française...), la FRA a débarrassé son site de documents non-officiels et la définition en faisait partie.  Les Etats membres européens n'ont jamais été voulu que la définition soit officiellement adoptée.  Ce n'était qu'un document de travail et il a dont été supprimé.

En Amérique, où l'antisémitisme n'a jamais atteint les proportions européennes (pas de génocide, pas de pogroms, pas de haine endémique d'Israël), le United States Department of State, l'équivalent d'un ministère des Affaires étrangères, a publié le 8 juin 2010 sur son site la définition européenne: Defining Anti-Semitism, Fact Sheet. Elle s'y trouve toujours...  Contrairement à ce qui se passe en Europe, elle ne semble pas poser de problèmes à l'administration Obama.  Compte tenu de la montée de l'antisémitisme en Europe, la définition était de toute façon notoirement inefficace.

Adam Levine, le chanteur des Maroon 5, a été élu homme le plus sexy du monde par le magazine People. Et il n'est pas le seul.  Une douzaine d'autres Juifs sont également très sexy...

Legendary musician and all round true mensch Lou Reed passed away today. Cause of death is still not reported, but he has been sick for a while, undergoing a liver transplant in May of this year. He was only 71. [...]  I remember the press conference when he arrived in Israel, they asked him what he was going to do while he was here. He said he was going to Haifa to visit his aunt. He had a strong connection to Israel, visiting frequently and (as you can tell from the aunt comment) he had relatives here.

Lou’s strong connection to the Jewish people and to Israel can be heard in his lyrics from the song “Good Evening Mr. Waldheim” on his 1989 solo album “New York”, I highlighted the part I always thought was cool:

Ci-dessous nous reproduins un extrait consacré à Elder of Ziyon, l'un des blogs les plus influents dans la défense d'Israël et des Juifs.  Avec 10.000 visiteurs par jour, Elder qui est un Juif new-yorkais "assez ordinaire", dans la quarantaine, qui travaille dans le domaine de l'IT, a une réelle influence dans la lutte contre la propagande anti-Israël, voire anti-juive, propagée dans la cybersphère, notamment en provenance de l'Europe et de l'Union européenne (voir à la fin de ce message). Elder, devenu incontournable, explique comment il fonctionne et quels sont ses succès. Contrairement à ce qui se passe en Europe, il reçoit beaucoup d'informations et est en contact avec d'autres blogeurs, mais, explique-t-il avec humour:  "C'est évident que je suis en contact avec d'autres blogueurs mais il n'y a pas un bureau central de coordination de la Hasbara. Nous avons beaucoup de généraux mais très peu de troupes".  En effet nous sommes des "généraux" mais manquons cruellement de troupes...  L'excellent article de Tibor Krausz donne la parole à d'autres blogueurs exceptionnels: Israelly Cool (que nous citons souvent), Arnold Roth, Richard Landes et Dovid Efune @ Algemeiner.

"Pro-Israel bloggers clearly have their work cut out for them, but that doesn’t faze perhaps the most influential one of them. “We definitely make a difference,” insists the New York-based IT professional who goes by the cyberspace nom de guerre of Elder of Ziyon and enjoys regular attention from mainstream media outlets for his investigative scoops.

Elder, who chose his pseudonym to poke fun at cockamamie conspiracy theories about Jewish power, began frequenting Yahoo message boards a decade ago to challenge the views and logic of Israel’s garrulous detractors. “Arguing one-on-one with people emotionally invested in hating Israel was a big waste of time,” the blogger, who prefers to remain anonymous and describes himself as a “fairly ordinary middle-aged Jewish guy,” tells The Report. “I looked for alternatives where I could write more freely and expansively for a larger audience.”

So in August 2004, he started his own blog. After a first few tentative steps of simply reposting items from the mainstream media, he soon came into his own as a seemingly indefatigable one-man operation, armed only with a computer, chutzpa and stamina. In several new posts daily, except on Shabbat, the blogger — who reaches some 10,000 readers a day and has many fans far and wide, Israel included — links to the latest articles of interest on the Middle East, parses media reports for inaccuracies and overt biases, provides satirical rebuttals to Israel’s fiercest critics, and highlights the Jewish State’s little-publicized achievements. “It takes up a few hours a day; but then again, that’s less time than most people spend watching TV,” he says.

He spends some of that time digging up archival records about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and perusing damning reports by NGOs and the UN on Israeli policy to verify the credibility of their sources and double-check their conclusions. Recently, after delving into a UN document and poring over photographs of damaged buildings in Gaza, he discovered that two Palestinian children whose deaths had been blamed on Israel during its week-long Operation Pillar of Defense offensive against Hamas militants last November, including the much-publicized death of a local BBC correspondent’s young son, had in fact been killed by Hamas rockets. His findings made the headlines.
