"The threat to Arab honor did not come from a worthy foe, like the Western Christians, but by from Jews, traditionally the most passive, abject, cowardly of the populations over which Muslims ruled. [...]  the prospect of an independent state of should-be dhimmis struck Arab leaders as more than humiliating. It endangered all Islam. Thus Rahman Azzam Pasha, the head of the newly formed Arab League, spoke for his “honor group” when he threatened that “if the Zionists dare establish a state, the massacres we would unleash would dwarf anything which Genghis Khan and Hitler perpetrated.” As the Armenians had discovered a generation earlier, the mere suspicion of rebellion could engender massacres. [...] The loss in 1948, therefore, constituted the most catastrophic possible outcome for this honor-group: Seven Arab armies, representing the honor of hundreds of thousands of Arabs (and Muslims), were defeated by less than a million Jews, the surviving remnant of the most devastating and efficient genocide in history. To fall to people so low on the scale that it is dishonorable even to fight them—nothing could be more devastating. And this humiliating event occurred on center stage of the new postwar global community, before whom the Arab league representatives had openly bragged about their upcoming slaughters. In the history of a global public, never has any single and so huge a group suffered so much dishonor and shame in the eyes of so great an audience."

Why the Arab World Is Lost in an Emotional Nakba, and How We Keep It There. By ignoring the honor-shame dynamic in Arab political culture, is the West keeping itself from making headway toward peace? @ Tablet, par le Prof. Richard Landes

[...] Arab political culture, to take one example—despite some liberal voices, despite noble dissidents—tends to favor ascendancy through aggression, the politics of the strong horse,” and the application of “Hama rules”—which all combine to produce a Middle East caught between prison and anarchy, between Sisi’s Egypt and al-Assad’s Syria. Our inability, however well-meaning, to discuss the role of honor-shame dynamics in the making of this political culture poses a dilemma: By keeping silent, we not only operate in denial, but we may actually strengthen these brutal values and weaken the very ones we treasure.
Few conflicts offer a better place to explore these matters than the Arab-Israeli conflict.
In order to understand the role of hard zero-sum, honor-shame concerns in the attitude of Arabs toward Israel, one must first understand the role of the Jew in the Muslim Arab honor-group. For the 13 centuries before Zionism, Jews had been subject to a political status in Muslim lands specifically designed around issues of honor (to Muslims) and shame (to Jews). Jews were dhimmi, “protected” from Muslim violence by their acceptance of daily public degradation and legal inferiority. Noted Chateaubriand in the 19th century: “Special target of all [Muslim and Christian] contempt, the Jews lower their heads without complaint; they suffer all insults without demanding justice; they let themselves be crushed by blows. … Penetrate the dwellings of these people, you will find them in frightful poverty.”
For more than a millennium, Arab and Muslim honor resided, among other places, in their domination and humiliation of their dhimmi—and when the occasional reformer equalized their legal status, he struck a heavy blow to Muslim honor. Noted a British envoy on the impact of Muhammad Ali’s reforms: “The Mussulmans … deeply deplore the loss of that sort of superiority which they all & individually exercised over & against the other sects. … A Mussulman … believes and maintains that a Christian—& still more a Jew—is an inferior being to himself.”
To say that to the honor-driven Arab and Muslim political player, in the 20th century as in the 10th century, the very prospect of an autonomous Jewish political entity is a blasphemy against Islam, and an insult to Arab virility, is not to say that every period of Muslim rule involved deliberate humiliation of dhimmi. Nor is it to say that all Arabs think like this. On the contrary, this kind of testosterone-fueled, authoritarian discourse imposes its interpretation of “honor” on the entire community, often violently. Thus, while some Arabs in 1948 Palestine may have viewed the prospect of Jewish sovereignty as a valuable opportunity, the Arab leadership and “street” agreed that for the sake of Arab honor Israel must be destroyed and that those who disagreed were traitors to the Arab cause.
Worse: The threat to Arab honor did not come from a worthy foe, like the Western Christians, but by from Jews, traditionally the most passive, abject, cowardly of the populations over which Muslims ruled. [...]
So, the prospect of an independent state of should-be dhimmis struck Arab leaders as more than humiliating.
The loss in 1948, therefore, constituted the most catastrophic possible outcome for this honor-group: Seven Arab armies, representing the honor of hundreds of thousands of Arabs (and Muslims), were defeated by less than a million Jews, the surviving remnant of the most devastating and efficient genocide in history. To fall to people so low on the scale that it is dishonorable even to fight them—nothing could be more devastating. And this humiliating event occurred on center stage of the new postwar global community, before whom the Arab league representatives had openly bragged about their upcoming slaughters. In the history of a global public, never has any single and so huge a group suffered so much dishonor and shame in the eyes of so great an audience.
So, alongside the nakba (catastrophe) that struck hundreds of thousands of the Arab inhabitants of the former British Mandate Palestine, we find yet another, much greater psychological catastrophe that struck the entire Arab world and especially its leaders: a humiliation so immense that Arab political culture and discourse could not absorb it. Initially, the refugees used the term nakba to reproach the Arab leaders who started and lost the war that so hurt them. In a culture less obsessed by honor and more open to self-criticism, this might have led to the replacement of political elites with leaders more inclined to move ahead with positive-sum games of the global politics of the United Nations and the Marshall Plan. But when appearances matter above all, any public criticism shames the nation, the people, and the leaders.
Instead, in a state of intense humiliation and impotence on the world stage, the Arab leadership chose denial—the Jews did not, could not, have not won. The war was not—could never—be over until victory. If the refugees from this Zionist aggression disappeared, absorbed by their brethren in the lands to which they fled, this would acknowledge the intolerable: that Israel had won. And so, driven by rage and denial, the Arab honor group redoubled the catastrophe of its own refugees: They made them suffer in camps, frozen in time at the moment of the humiliation, waiting and fighting to reverse that Zionist victory that could be acknowledged. The continued suffering of thesesacrificial victims on the altar of Arab pride called out to the Arab world for vengeance against the Jews. In the meantime, wherever Muslims held power, they drove their Jews out as a preliminary act of revenge.

You Only Live Twice, Michel Gurfinkiel

"Over the years, the entire European political class has been reeducated into a culture of Israel-bashing." (Michel Gurfinkiel)

"Any clear-sighted and sensible Jew who has a sense of history would understand that this is the time to get out." (Robert Wistrich)

You Only Live Twice. Vibrant Jewish communities were reborn in Europe after the Holocaust. Is there a future for them in the 21st century?, By Michel Gurfinkiel.  Extraits:

[...] The Zionist leader Ze’ev Jabotinsky once famously distinguished between the “anti-Semitism of persons” and the “anti-Semitism of things.” The former category, made up of individuals (including some Jews) with their particular moral or political shortcomings, can be fought, at least up to a point. The latter, which has to do with deep-seated social factors, with demographics, and/or with hard, obdurate, ingrained ideology, is another matter entirely. Of the two varieties, European Jews now confront the second. What will they do?

Emigration, either to Israel or to America, is an option being actively considered. Should this become a widespread choice, it will inevitably be followed by the shrinkage of Jewish institutions, the drying-up of religious and cultural life, the deepening erosion of morale, growing anxiety and fearfulness—and more emigration.

The signs are everywhere. Recently, a leading rabbi in Paris reported that four-fifths of the young people being married at his synagogue no longer see their future in their country of birth. Admittedly, right now everybody in France is pessimistic about the future, especially the economic future; according to a recent poll, more than one in three citizens are considering emigration, and the proportions are higher among the young and the working class. Still, French Jews, and young French Jews in particular, appear to be considerably more pessimistic than others, and more serious about their pessimism.

And it must be said that they have reason. A sense of history, even if unarticulated and perhaps barely conscious, inevitably hovers over today’s situation. Almost a half-century ago, in an essay entitled “Jews and Germans,” the great scholar Gershom Scholem endeavored to locate the “false start” that led from Germany’s guarded mid-19th-century enfranchisement of its Jews, and from German Jews’ grateful embrace of all things German and the dream of a unique German-Jewish “symbiosis,” to the savage German attempt in the mid-20th century to annihilate all the Jews of Europe. While granting that the key to the mystery remained elusive, and that in any case the past could never be “completely mastered,” Scholem dared to hope that increased communication between the parties might yet yield the “reconciliation of those who have been separated.” Dying in 1982, he was spared the need to witness the outcome of his brave hope.

He is known for playing Sherlock Holmes - and it turns out that solving mysteries is a family tradition for Benedict Cumberbatch, whose great-great- grandfather helped thwart a 19th century blood libel.

In the summer of 1872, Robert William Cumberbatch was serving as British consul in Turkey, when a woman accused the Jews of the city of Smyrna of abducting and torturing her child. According to the JC's report, anti-Jewish rioting began but ceased after Cumberbatch "held an inquest... and it proved she was of unsound mind".

Cumberbatch was clearly convinced the Jews deserved his help, writing later: "I sincerely trust the day may not be far distant when the Jewish nation throughout the world may be respected in the same manner as it is in our own happy country".

This was not the only time he intervened on behalf of the Jews of Smyrna, home to thousands of Jews and the site of continuous fighting between the Greek population and the Ottoman rulers. When Cumberbatch died in post in 1876, the local chief rabbi and other Jewish notables attended the funeral and the JC commented that the community had "sustained a great loss" of someone who had "at all times befriended them".  Suite.

France and Ukraine push global aliyah to new highs, By Aryeh Savir, Tazpit News Agency et Jewish Chronicle

Global aliyah is up 55 per cent, due largely to dramatic increases in immigration from France and Ukraine, Jewish Agency chairman Natan Sharansky announced yesterday.

The Jewish Agency estimates French aliyah will surpass 5,000 by the end of 2014, an all-time record and a full 1 per cent of the 500,000-strong French Jewish community. It will be the largest proportion of a Western Jewish community to make aliyah in a single year.

Mr Sharansky said: "Never in the history of the state of Israel has there been a Jewish community in the free world that has sent such a large proportion of its Jews to Israel. We cannot take responsibility for the fact that so many Jews and so many French young people in general are leaving France, but the fact that Israel has become the number one destination for young French Jews is a testament to our success in connecting them to the Jewish state."

Mr Sharansky noted that the Jewish Agency's Israel experience programmes, including Masa Israel Journey and Bac Bleu Blanc, for teens, have attracted record numbers of young French Jews over the past two years, adding that it is The Jewish Agency's responsibility not only to facilitate French Jewish aliyah but also to strengthen Jewish life in France.

“If only we had had our own Denzel Washington, Whoopi Goldberg, Sammy Davis, Morgan Freeman, they would have reacted against this, and Dieudonne would not have been the ultimate icon of a system ruled by injustice.” (French comedian Rachel Kahn)

Times of Israel: Black Jews in France foresaw Dieudonne fiasco. Feeling bitter and isolated within the Jewish community, black Jews say they’re asked to choose one identity to express — and suppress.

Although months have passed since the high-profile Dieudonne affair, the scars are still fresh in the memory of French Jews. But the black comedian’s arguably anti-Semitic salute was felt above all in the small black Jewish community.

Led by Guershon N’duwa [photo], president of the 250-family Black-Jewish Federation in Paris, black Jews have recently begun expressing their bitterness in the media.

N’duwa was aware of Dieudonne’s controversial shows since the early 2000s, he said, arguing that the performer’s latest anti-Semitic diatribes were not surprising. The black Jewish community repeatedly tried – in vain – to warn Jewish authorities, N’duwa said.

“As part of the black community, we have known Dieudonne and his shows for years, N’duwa told The Times of Israel. “We’ve been warning Jewish leaders for a long time. A handful of them listened, but the majority turned a blind eye to us.”  N’duwa said he feels angry and frustrated.

“Now, I look back retrospectively and think that this mess could have probably been avoided if it had been dealt with at the right time. Instead, people in the Jewish community accused us of being troublemakers, trying to get media attention. How can we not feel bitter about this?” he asked.

To N’duwa, the Dieudonne scandal did not start with his controversial 2014 show in La Main d’Or Theatre. Signs included Dieudonne’s trip to Algeria in February 2005, during which he publicly criticized the “Zionist lobby” and defined the Holocaust as “memorial pornography.”

N’duwa said the reaction of Jewish authorities was symptomatic of the lack of recognition of black Jews within French Jewry. This idea recently caught the attention of film director and producer Annick N’Guessan, co-founder of the Mondiapress TV production company.

Ajouté le 23/06/2014: France and Ukraine push global aliyah to new highs

Shelly Marhevka, IDF intelligence commander
"[...] The first thing that strikes one upon first visiting Israel is that these people appear to bear no relation whatsoever to the bookish, anxious stereotype of the Jew which initially attracted me to the breed. They are athletic beyond belief. At 11.30 at night, as K and I sit drinking in the LaLaLand beach bar, they’re still jogging along the esplanade and playing volleyball on the court. All along the seafront from the Old Port to Jaffa, there are outdoor gyms, their equipment painted in the primary colours of the playground. No matter how sweltering the weather, they are always in use.

To say that Israelis are ‘confident’ is like saying Rihanna (who played Tel Aviv last year, along with Madonna and Lady Gaga, thus making the ‘boycott’ look somewhat silly: as I leave this time, Tel Aviv is gearing up for the Rolling Stones) is attractive. And this has grown over the years I’ve been coming here. Perhaps the Arab Spring and its subsequent messy afterbirth have made them feel that the pressure is off them while the Muslim world continues to tear itself apart. Or maybe they were just made this way; the early Zionist poet Jabotinsky did warn us, ‘From the pit of decay and dust/ Through blood and sweat/ A generation will arise to us/ Proud, generous and fierce.’ About right, but he forgot ‘fit’.

I’m sitting on the Hilton Beach, knee deep in my gay brothers, when I catch a beautiful blonde woman looking at me. My hopes are dashed when she says, ‘Excuse me, you’re English. Do you have a Nurofen on you?’ I offer her prescription codeine. ‘Bingo!’ she laughs.

Army Krav Maga
My new friend is Dina, a teacher from London, but long ago married to an Israeli. I ask her what she thinks of the recent change in the law which will require Orthodox men to serve in the army; Ben-Gurion, in order to get support from religious Jews (many of whom are, ironically, anti-Zionist), did a deal with them in the run-up to the re-creation of Israel allowing the Orthodox community to opt out.

‘About time! I’ve got a son doing his army duty now; my other son and my daughter will follow him when they’re old enough. So I’ve got three children who may have to fight and die for a country their mother wasn’t even born in, while the Orthodox have children like there’s no tomorrow and don’t have to give up any of them? Like I say, about time.’ She points down the beach to our right. ‘See that — that’s the religious beach here in Tel Aviv — right next to the official gay beach. Don’t tell me this in an accident. There’s so much resentment in this country towards the religious. Hopefully the new law will bring us closer together. We couldn’t be further apart.’

In the Eretz Museum, at an exhibition of wildlife photography, I get talking to Call-Me-Boris. ‘Not my real name, but a good English name, no?’ he twinkles. Call-Me-Boris came here as a child from the disintegrating Soviet Union — he’s not even sure he’s Jewish, but that nice Mr Gorbachev’s glasnost policy brought him here: My father said that it was the first time any people in the Soviet Union pretended to be a Jew to get better treatment from the government! So we don’t ask him too many questions.’

"[...] As one British intelligence chief put it this week: "Belgium is top of our list of concerns. It has a large proportion of radicalised ex-fighters of Moroccan origin. All of them are just a Eurostar journey away from London."

What makes this doubly difficult is that the Belgian government has for years had a "hear no evil, see no evil" attitude to Islamists. The Belgian view is that if they leave Islamist groups alone then they will leave Belgium alone. It's a typically cynical, morally corrupt view from a country I came to regard as itself cynical and morally corrupt while I worked in Brussels.

The British authorities are criticised for refusing to take Islamist hate speakers seriously but compared to the Belgians, who give these groups near-free rein to spread their poison, we are models of good practice.  The Belgian poison is developed from a mix, unique in Europe, of open Islamism and open antisemitism.

A few months into my time in Brussels, I walked into a restaurant a friend, who looks Jewish. The waiter (who apparently didn't think I also did) asked what "the Jew girl" wanted. When we got up, saying both Jews would leave, he replied they'd only have served one Jew, anyway, not two.
Last year, Joods Actueel published a survey of 4,000 Belgian children aged 14-18, which found about 75 per cent of young Muslims agreed with hard-core antisemitic statements such as that Jews want to dominate, have too much power and consider themselves superior to others. Only 10 per cent of non-Muslim children agreed.  And now the rest of Europe is suffering the consequences."

Source: Bosnia fans shout "Jews go home" at Rio fan festival.

Group of Bosnia fans outside Rio fan festival chant 'Jews go home' to man carrying Israel flag. Racism alive and well it seems.

JPost: German journalist Christoph Hörstel, a zealous supporter of Iran’s regime and Hezbollah and an alleged denier of the Holocaust, was invited to an event at the former Sachsenhausen concentration camp to commemorate the July 20, 1944, attempt to assassinate Hitler by German officers.

German author Tilman Tarach reported on Friday about the slated event on the website of the Berlin-based Jungle World weekly, causing organizers of the Sachsenhausen memorial to cancel Hörstel’s appearance the same day.

The planned participation of Hörstel showed that Germany’s remembrance culture had “gone to the dogs,” Tarach said. Organizers turned victims into perpetrators with the “planned event of a Holocaust- denier or relativist,” he wrote.  [...]

Tarach recounted an example of Hörstel’s playing down, or possibly denying, the Holocaust, on his Facebook page.  When someone asked about revising the Holocaust, Hörstel replied, “All in good time.”

Hörstel has said that Germany “has in no way responsibility for the security of Israel or for its right to exist.” He has spoken at the annual Al-Quds Day March in Berlin, which attracts more than 1,000 supporters of Hezbollah and Iran, and calls for the elimination of Israel. [...]

German-Jewish commentator and satirical polemicist Henryk M. Broder sarcastically wrote on The Axis of Good website that Germany’s remembrance culture is functioning “super.” He recalled a comment from the late writer Eike Geisel who said that Germany’s remembrance culture represents “the highest form of forgetting.”
