En 1982, le Premier ministre israélien Menahem Begin, rescapé de la Shoah et des camps du Goulag soviétique, répondait au sénateur américain Joe Biden qui avait menacé de couper l’aide financière des États-Unis à Israël:

"Je ne suis pas un Juif aux genoux tremblants. Je suis un Juif fier, fort de 3700 ans d’histoire civilisée. Personne n’est venu à notre secours quand nous mourions dans les chambres à gaz et les fours crématoires. Personne n’est venu à notre secours quand nous nous efforcions de créer notre pays. Nous avons payé pour lui. Nous nous sommes battus pour lui. Nous sommes morts pour lui. Nous resterons fidèles à nos principes. Nous les défendrons. Et, si nécessaire, nous mourrons pour eux de nouveau, avec ou sans votre aide financière."

‘DON’T threaten us with cutting off your aid. It will not work. I am not a Jew with trembling knees. I am a proud Jew with 3,700 years of civilised history. Nobody came to our aid when we were dying in the gas chambers and ovens. Nobody came to our aid when we were striving to create our country. We paid for it. We fought for it. We died for it. We will stand by our principles. We will defend them. And, when necessary, we will die for them again, with or without your aid.’ 

These powerful words were spoken by Menachem Begin, Israeli Prime Minister, to Senator Joe Biden in 1982 after Biden threatened to cut off aid to Israel during a meeting of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Biden banged his fists on a desk while berating Begin, a survivor of the Holocaust and the Soviet gulag camps.  But Begin wasn’t going to be cowed. His words are a reminder that Biden is not the nice guy the Democratic Party like to portray. Should he get the nod to be their POTUS candidate, and win, there is a real fear that the US will be lost for ever to a toxic quagmire of Islamists and the far Left.

Biden is yet another weak Democratic candidate, pandering to the demands of the far Left and Islamists in his party. His recent behaviour during the riots in the US shows him to be craven and supportive of those other disrupters of democracy – anarchists and race-baiters.  [...] 

Most telling are Biden’s petulant plans to tear up any policies which President Trump has put in place to protect and strengthen Israel. Last month Biden, in a nod to the Islamists in his party, said he would reverse Trump’s decision on foreign aid and start to send money to the Palestinians again. 

In 2018 Trump cut aid to the anti-Israel United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). In the same year he signed the Taylor Force Act which requires Congress to withhold funding to the Palestinian Authority (PA) because of their ‘pay to slay’ policies. Force was a US citizen murdered by a Palestinian terrorist in Jaffa. Until then the PA received around £320million a year from the US. 

The Palestinian leadership in the West Bank and Gaza have a nasty habit of siphoning off massive amounts of foreign aid to fund their luxury lifestyles and jihadist war against Israel, while many of their own citizens remain impoverished. Is it any wonder that Trump slashed this budget? Why would Biden want to change this policy and send tax dollars to Islamists who have killed both American citizens and Jews? 

In a further symptom of senility, 77-year-old Biden said that he would reopen the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) mission in Washington. The PLO’s terrorist activities are well documented. Any presidential candidate who wants to create an official presence of the PLO in Washington is no moderate or friend of the West. He also plans to reinstate Obama’s insidious and dangerous Iran deal, even though Trump correctly withdrew US participation in 2018.

Why American Jews are ‘disloyal’ - Trump is a prophet without profit

Donald Trump is the Cyrus of our era. He is the most pro-Israel president the United States has ever had. He clearly likes and admires Jews. He’s more accepting of his daughter’s faith than most non-Orthodox Jews would be if their daughter went frum. […]

Jews are supposed to be clever, but their adherence to the Democrats is dumb, a mixture of sentimentality about the party of FDR — a party that no longer exists — and fear of the Republicans as a hybrid of Cossacks, evangelical Christians and, perhaps worst of all if you want to get on and up, country-club snobs. Meanwhile, Republicans are more supportive of Israel and religious freedom than Democrats are. No wonder Trump is astounded that American Jews show no sign of reciprocating with their votes in 2020. No wonder he’s calling them ‘disloyal’ — disloyal, that is, to him, because they refuse to reciprocate his generosity, or to calibrate their votes to their economic and political interests, like sane people would. Jews in Israel, Britain and France have made that shift. But then, they’re not as complacent as most American Jews are. […]

Meanwhile, two futures are forming for American Jews. One is the path of greater intermarriage and assimilation, and less affiliation to Israel and Torah: the left turn that leads ultimately to disappearance, and in the meantime to secularism, ‘social justice’, spasms of anti-Zionism, caring too much about what non-Jews think, and a ‘total lack of knowledge’ about Judaism, Jewishness and the Jewish past and present that makes all this possible. The other path is that of keeping the faith, teaching the children, keeping a stiff or at least moderately inflexible neck, and valuing a candidate’s position on Jewish issues. 

So Trump is right. The Jews who are drifting out of Jewishness don’t really care what he does for Israel. They don’t even bother to practice Judaism or educate their children. And the Jews who care intensely about Jewishness and Israel aren’t redefining the Jewish vote. He’s wrong, however about the reason for this. It’s not because they’re disloyal or ungrateful; it’s because they’re not yet numerous enough to tip the balance. Demography may soon do that, though. With liberal Jews opting out and conservative Jews making up the difference, American Jews will soon turn more religious, more socially conservative, and more hawkish. Trump may be playing for a future beyond 2020. In the meantime, a prophet, as someone once said, is without honor in his own country."

I have been publishing my novels in the UK since 1998, when my first book, The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon, became a surprise bestseller. 

I generally come to Britain from my home in Portugal whenever a new work of mine is released to give talks at bookshops, libraries and literary festivals. My publisher’s attempts to interest event organisers in me aren’t always successful, of course. But this year, for the first time, I have been turned down for being Jewish. A little context. Peter Owen Publishers launched my new novel, The Gospel According to Lazarus, in mid-April. An old friend of mine who is a part-time book publicist began trying to set up events for me three months earlier.

In early March, he called and confessed – in a distressed tone I’d never heard before – that he had just been turned down by two cultural organisations that had previously shown enthusiasm for hosting an event with me. “They asked me if you were Jewish, and the moment I said you were, they lost all interest,” he said. “They even stopped replying to my emails and returning my phone messages.” 

I’ll call my publicist John as he prefers to remain anonymous. He has also asked me to refrain from identifying the organisations that reacted negatively to my being Jewish. John told me that the final conversations he had with the two event co-ordinators convinced him that they weren’t antisemitic themselves but they feared a backlash – protests by their members and others – if they extended an invitation to a Jewish writer.

After our phone conversation, I was deeply shocked and upset. Facing discrimination is always unpleasant and infuriating and I never expected that my career in the UK would be prejudiced by my being Jewish. It made Britain seem like a place I didn’t know and maybe never knew. Even just asking about my religious affiliation struck me as outrageous. The situation seemed particularly ironic because I have long endeavoured in my novels to give voice to people who have been systematically silenced by prejudice and bigotry. Obviously, I do not believe that anyone benefits when writers are censored for their ethnicity or faith."

He listens to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu more than he does to Mrs. Merkel because he thinks Israel’s aggressive defense of its national interests reflects a better understanding of the world, and because he thinks cooperating with Bibi brings more political benefit at home and more effective assistance abroad than anything the Germans are willing to provide."

Une lettre d’Eleanor Roosevelt défendant Israël aux enchères (1957)

Une lettre de 1957 écrite par Eleanor Roosevelt dans laquelle l’ancienne Première Dame prend vigoureusement la défense des actions israéliennes pendant la crise de Suez a été mise aux enchères. La maison d’enchères Nate D. Sanders Auctions, à Los Angeles, lancera la vente jeudi au prix de 22 500 dollars. 

Ce courrier, écrit sous son en-tête personnelle, «Madame Franklin D. Roosevelt», répond directement aux critiques d’une tribune parue dans un journal dans laquelle elle prenait la défense d’Israël au moment de la crise de 1956. Elle était adressée à Tom Dietrich, de Brooklyn.

Roosevelt avait écrit :

«Si vous suivez pas à pas les Nations unies et que vous comprenez les difficultés, vous réaliserez alors qu’Israël n’a pas été un agresseur. La charte des Nations unies autorise l’auto-défense et le cas d’Israël a été purement un cas d’autodéfense. / Je ne suis pas d’accord avec vous sur l’établissement de l’Etat d’Israël. Les Israéliens ont droit à leur pays et je pense qu’il est insensé de supposer qu’ils prévoient de nous plonger dans une guerre. Ils veulent la paix tout autant, si ce n’est plus, que les autres nations. / Nous dirigeons les Nations unies alors il ne s’agira pas d’un cas où on se laisse prendre à un complot».

Le catalogue d’enchères a qualifié le document de deux pages de «lettre exceptionnelle, avec un contenu rare où la première dame montre son engagement et son refus de tergiverser sur l’Etat d’Israël».

Eric Hoffer: "Ce qui adviendra à Israël sera notre sort à tous"

Eric Hoffer (1902-1983) était un philosophe américain - son premier livre, The True Believer, Thoughts On The Nature Of Mass Movements (Le Vrai Croyant), publié en 1951, est considéré comme un classique - il n'était pas juif:

"Les Juifs sont un peuple particulier: ce qui est permis à d'autres nations est interdit aux Juifs. D'autres nations expulsent des milliers, et même des millions de gens, et il n'y a pas de problème de réfugiés. La Russie l'a fait, la Pologne, la Tchécoslovaquie l'ont fait, la Turquie a expulsé un million de Grecs, et l'Algérie un million de Français. L'Indonésie a expulsé, Dieu sait combien de Chinois, et personne ne dit un mot au sujet des réfugiés. Mais dans le cas d'Israël, les Arabes déplacés sont devenus d'éternels réfugiés.

Tout le monde insiste sur le fait qu'Israël doit reprendre tout Arabe. Arnold Toynbee appelle ce déplacement des Arabes une atrocité plus grande que tout ce qu'ont commis les Nazis.

D'autres nations victorieuses sur les champs de bataille dictent les conditions de la paix. Mais quand Israël est vainqueur il doit supplier pour obtenir la paix. Chacun attend des Juifs qu'ils soient les seuls vrais Chrétiens sur terre.

D'autres nations, quand elles sont vaincues, survivent et se rétablissent, mais si Israël était vaincu une seule fois, il serait détruit. Si Nasser avait triomphé, l'été dernier, il aurait effacé Israël de la carte, et personne n'aurait levé le petit doigt pour sauver les Juifs. Aucun engagement pris envers les Juifs par quelque gouvernement que ce soit, dont le nôtre, ne vaut le papier sur lequel il est écrit.

Le monde entier s'indigne quand on meurt au Vietnam, ou quand deux noirs sont exécutés en Rhodésie. Mais quand Hitler massacra les Juifs, personne ne protesta auprès de lui.

Les Suédois, qui sont prêts à rompre leurs relations diplomatiques avec les Etats-Unis à cause de ce que nous faisons au Vietnam, ne bronchèrent pas quand Hitler massacrait les Juifs. Ils envoyèrent à Hitler du minerai de fer de première qualité, des roulements à bille, et assurèrent l'entretien de ses transports ferroviaires de troupes destinés à la Norvège.

Les Juifs sont seuls au monde. Si Israël survit, ce sera uniquement grâce aux efforts des Juifs. Et aux ressources juives.

Pourtant, en ce moment même, Israël est notre seul allié inconditionnel et fiable. Nous pouvons compter sur Israël plus qu'Israël peut compter sur nous. Il suffit seulement d'imaginer ce qui se serait produit, l'été dernier, si les Arabes, avec leurs soutiens russes, avaient gagné la guerre, pour comprendre à quel point la survie d'Israël est vitale pour l'Amérique, pour l'Occident en général.

J'ai une prémonition qui ne me quittera pas: ce qui adviendra d'Israël sera notre sort à tous. Si Israël devait périr, l'holocauste fondrait sur nous. "

A resolution condemning antisemitism in Europe passed the U.S. Senate by unanimous vote on Thursday [le 5 juin].

The resolution, authored by Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and co-sponsored by 60 other senators encouraged “greater cooperation with the European governments, in the European Union, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe in preventing and responding to antisemitism.”

“In light of the rise of antisemitism in Europe, this resolution calls on European governments to not only stand against antisemitism, but to work to end it,” said Sen. Menendez, applauding the unanimous passage of the bill.

Major Jewish human rights group the Anti-Defamation League meanwhile hailed the resolution and the condemnation of European antisemitism.

“The resolution condemning antisemitism represents the voice of the American people as expressed through the unanimous vote in the United States Senate in support of Jewish communities in Europe who are reeling from a tragic surge of antisemitism and antisemitic violence,” said ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman.

“The U.S. government is unique in its commitment to addressing global antisemitism as a matter of foreign policy.  The resolution reinforces that commitment by clearly providing the Senate’s guidance to the administration for action in specific areas which will help European governments and civil society do a better job of ensuring that Jews throughout Europe can express their Jewish identity without fear for their physical safety,” he said.

ADL National Chairman Barry Curtis-Lusher offered “special thanks” to “Senators Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) who have so fervently rallied around combating antisemitism around the world.”

“The United States must work with the European Union and European governments to address the alarming rise of antisemitism in Europe and prevent future affronts to basic human rights and dignity. Increasing violence against Jewish individuals in Europe is evidence that our efforts to keep men and women of all faiths safe from violence must never stop,” said Kirk on Thursday. Suite.

Deux médias américains importants (The Algemeiner et le New York Observer) analysent un phénomène récent.  Il s'agit de la forte augmentation de Juifs créateurs de richesse qui souhaitent émigrer vers les États-Unis au lieu de s'installer en Israël où les conditions pour mener leurs activités professionnelles sont moins facile. L'avocat Marlen Kruzhkov de New York a confié à Algemeiner que même ses clients non-Juifs sont consternés par le niveau d'antisémitisme en France et l'impuissance à l'enrayer.  On aura noté que ces questions sont traitées sans le moindre problème en Amérique, alors qu'en France on minimise le phénomène.  On commence à en parler maintenant parce que justement on en parle en Israël, en Amérique, au Royaume-Uni et ailleurs.

The Algmeiner: An attorney at a top New York law firm representing high-net-worth clients told The Algemeiner on Sunday that he has seen a dramatic increase in inquiries from wealthy French Jews who are looking to relocate to New York and invest locally due to violent antisemitism on the continent.

“Until recently there wasn’t a huge interest in French Jewish families emigrating or making a big move of their assets somewhere,” noted Marlen Kruzhkov, of Gusrae Kaplan.  [...]

Since the beginning of 2014 and especially since Israel’s recent Operation Protective Edge against Hamas rocket fire out of Gaza, “from two to three people a year, I’ve gotten calls from two to three dozen people in the last three months,” Kruzhkov said.

Kruzhkov’s clients average net worth is in the $50 to $70 million range, according to a report in the New York Observer. While he’s worked with French-speaking Jews for close to a decade, he pointed out that even some of his non-Jewish clients are aghast at what they see happening in France.

“One of my clients has a gallery in France. They’re not Jewish but they have a gallery which happens to be across the street from the Israeli embassy,” he explained.  “And again, I emphasize: they are not Jews, nor are they French people; they are from Latvia.” But, “they were shocked at the level of vitriol, the demonstrations that were happening. Their gallery was being shut down on an almost daily basis, because they were shutting down the entire street while these horrible, horrible violent protests were being held near the Israeli embassy.”

“The first thing we ask a client is, ‘why are you here,’ ‘why now,’ ‘why all of a sudden,’ ‘what is your goal?’” he told The Algemeiner. “And almost all of them answer, ‘they don’t feel safe anymore.’ And why they US? ‘Because it’s a good place to invest,’” he recounted.  “Literally everyone – and it came up in every conversation – every single one of them said they didn’t feel comfortable or safe anymore.”

Nothing that either side has done in that terrible conflict comes close to the routine brutality of ISIS.

Karim couldn’t help expressing bitterness about this. “I don’t see any attention from the rest of the world,” he said. “In one day, they killed more than two thousand Yazidi in Sinjar, and the whole world says, ‘Save Gaza, save Gaza.’ ” [...]

The actress was criticized for partnering with the soft drink brand, but not because she was peddling carbonated and caloric beverages, since Soda Stream is seen as a healthy alternative to the sugary sodas in the marketplace. The company has been criticized for operating a manufacturing plant in an Israeli settlement in the West Bank.  “[I'm being called] the new face of apartheid. There’s a lot of anti-Semitism out there,” she commented.

In other (aesthetically) pleasing news for Israel supporters.

France’s former first lady Carla Bruni declared herself “crazy about Israel” and talked about Jewish family ties in an interview published by an Israeli daily on Friday. 

Ahead of a May 25 concert in Tel Aviv, the singer, guitarist and former model told the Hebrew-language Yediot Aharonot that she hoped to bring both her husband, former president Nicolas Sarkozy, and her son Aurelien with her.  Italian-born Bruni, 46, told the newspaper that her father was Jewish and that while Sarkozy had a Jewish grandfather he also has a Jewish grandson,Solal, through his son Jean’s 2008 marriage to Jewish heiress Jessica Sebaoun.

A couple of days ago Jon Segall [photo] wrote an interesting piece in The Times of Israel about why, as a left wing Zionist, he’d finally given up on supporting J-Street: “Goodbye J-Street, you lost me“. I felt J-Street were bad from the start, right back to their covering up initial and large funding from George Soros. I’ve also recently watched a damning 1 hour of a new film that really explores J-Street: The J-Street Challenge. I saw a special private preview.

I left the following comment on the post and then had an interesting and civil discussion with Jon:
Nice to see that J-Street is publicly loosing support. They’ve tried to deceive people into thinking they know what is best for us upity Israeli Jews who just refuse to roll over but the reality is they’re an evil bunch of self haters. Always were, always will be and it’s good that their insincere concern for Jewish Israel is being seen for what it really is now.

That said, their choices in giving platforms to anti-Zionists and those who repeat borderline anti-Semitic memes in the name of “discussing all points of view” is disturbing. Those people have plenty of platforms already. What J Street should be asking is “Why do we have to give them a platform when they already have a number of them”.

She spent long hours at work, spent Friday nights skyping with… her father, and used that famous Jewish dating site: LinkedIn.com to find love (these are her jokes from her very funny stand up routines).  But this week, angered and fatigued at 4:30 AM, working alone in the company office, irritated that her boss (Michael) only cared about how many impressions their videos received (quantity not quality), she made a video telling her colleagues that SHE QUIT. Pas d'antisémitisme dans 97% des universités américaines

Quelle est la situation dans les universités européennes? Pourquoi n'en parlent-on pas? Il y, par exemple, que l'Université Libre de Bruxelles reconnaît officiellement un cercle BDS-ULB, au même titre que les cercles de droit, philosophie et lettres, histoire etc.

JPost: Une étude récente "Israel and the Campus: The Real Story" réalisée par l'American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise (AICE) révèle qu'aucun événement anti-israélien ou incident antisémite n'a été signalé dans 97% des établissements universitaires américains et canadiens pendant l'année académique 2011-12 - ce qui prouve que le mouvement BDS est un échec.

Mitchell Bard, directeur exécutif de l'AICE, et Jeff Dawson, le coordinateur pour les campus de l'organisation privée, sont les auteurs du rapport. Des groupes d'étudiants juifs, épaulés par des organisations juives, apprennent à se battre efficacement contre ces tentatives.

Bard et Dawson ont répertorié 674 événements anti-israéliens qui se sont déroulés dans 108 universités américaines et canadiennes au cours de l'année académique 2011-12.

Un tiers des incidents ont eu lieu dans dix campus, dont quatre à l'Université de Californie.

Selon le rapport, il existe dans plusieurs de ces campus d'importants groupes pro-israéliens et on ne peut pas, en conséquence, les définir comme étant "hostiles envers Israël". L'Association des étudiants musulmans et l'Association des étudiants pour la Justice en Palestine sont responsables de la plupart des manifestations.

Aucune université américaine ne boycotte Israël et tous les recteurs ont déclaré qu'ils s'y opposeraient.

"Plutôt que d'affaiblir les relations entre les universités américaines et israéliennes, le mouvement BDS a eu l'effet totalement opposé à celui escompté et les liens sont plus forts que jamais et continuent de se renforcer", écrivent les auteurs.

Il est inexact de dire que les deux candidats à la présidence des Etats-Unis n'ont pas parlé de l'Europe. L'Europe de la destruction de la population juive (six millions d'être humains, dont un million et demi d'enfants) pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale a été évoquée. Le Président Obama qui est, comme Mitt Romney, philosémite et un grand ami d'Israël, a eu des propos malheureux.

En fait, le gouverneur Romney est allé à Yad Vashem lors d'une visite en Israël, mais face à la provocation il a eu la décence de ne pas politiser la Shoah pour marquer des points sur son rival.

Culture pop et yiddish: Jennifer Aniston est "verklempt" en annonçant ses fiançailles avec Justin Theroux

L'affirmation selon laquelle le yiddish est de plus en plus présent dans la culture populaire pourrait ne pas être si farfelue que ça.
