Since Hitler was defeated in 1945, there has been a tendency to say "goodbye to all that" (Sean McMeekin)

Sean McMeekin, historien américain:
"Since Hitler was defeated in 1945, there has been a tendency to say "goodbye to all that", as if the exposure of the Nazi death camps truly taught the world "a lesson it will never forget"*. And yet the toxic self-pitying disease which gave rise to Nazism is still abroad in the world, if no longer prevalent in Germany itself. At its most glaringly obvious, the syndrome manifests itself in common Arab anti-Semitism, with Israel blamed for every evil which has occurred in the Middle East in modern times. But there is a subtler version of the virus coursing through the veins of the West, such as the fashionable Third Worldist autocritique which decries every sin of European imperialism while absolving the world's most wicked post-colonial regimes of responsibility for their crimes."

* This phrase appears, for example, on the back jack cover of Joachim Fest's Hitler
Sean McMeekin, The Berlin-Baghdad Express, The Ottoman Empire and Germany's Bid for World Power, Alan Lane, 2010, p. 366.

"My Arab colleague was brave enough to admit this simple truth that the world has learned over and over again, and yet seems to never internalize: It starts with the Jews. It never ends with the Jews."

Irish Examiner:

The promotion of pluralism and tolerance is the primary challenge for Europe and the Middle East. In its absence thank goodness for the Jewish state, argues Dr. Einat Wilf.

Iraqi-Jewish refugee arrives in Israel, 1951.
JUST the other day, my Christian Lebanese colleague, whom I haven’t seen in two years, sat down across from me at the lobby of a Washington DC hotel and said, “We miss you”. As much as we are friends, he didn’t mean "me" personally.  He elaborated, “We, the Arabs of the Middle East, miss you – the Jews.” I smiled at the irony.

He went on to explain that while it has been more than sixty years since nearly a million Jews of the Arab Middle East have been expelled and forced out of their home countries, it is now becoming evident that this merely foreshadowed things to come.

He recounted his horror by the rising tide of Islamic brutality, genocide, and ethnic cleansing of Christian communities that is taking place everywhere the Islamic State is gaining ground. Just like the Jewish communities, those Christian communities – gone overnight - have been there before the birth of Islam and the Arab conquest of the region.

He said that he is terrified to think of an Arab Middle East without minorities. He expressed fear that the intolerance demonstrated towards the Jews decades ago is now being turned towards almost all other minorities from Christian to Allewaites to Shiites to the Sunni Muslims who fail to uphold the demented standards for Muslim piety set by the Islamic State.

My Arab colleague was brave enough to admit this simple truth that the world has learned over and over again, and yet seems to never internalize: It starts with the Jews. It never ends with the Jews.  [...]

Tragically, Europe worked out its identity as a continent, its ideologies and its loyalties, on the back and ultimately, on the ashes, of the Jews, nearly destroying the entire European civilization in the process.

When Europe is experiencing yet again rising tides of hatred and intolerance towards Jews – whatever else it might call it and however it might seek to mask it. It is time for Europe to ask what is wrong with Europe and not what is wrong with the Jews. Europe’s vision of itself is challenged from within and without, and this time around, it seems that many Jews don’t plan to stick around to find out how Europe will resolve the European Question "this time around.

The Arab world is no different with respect to the “Jewish Question”. It is not about the Jews, and not even about Israel and Zionism, it is about the question of Arab and Muslim identity. And, like Europe before it and, sadly perhaps still today, it is working out its identity, ideologies, and loyalties - initially on the back of the Jews and now on the back of other minorities.

Arab Leaders, Viewing Hamas as Worse Than Israel, Stay Silent.

CAIRO — Battling Palestinian militants in Gaza two years ago, Israel found itself pressed from all sides by unfriendly Arab neighbors to end the fighting.  Not this time.

After the military ouster of the Islamist government in Cairo last year, Egypt has led a new coalition of Arab states — including Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates — that has effectively lined up with Israel in its fight against Hamas, the Islamist movement that controls the Gaza Strip. That, in turn, may have contributed to the failure of the antagonists to reach a negotiated cease-fire even after more than three weeks of bloodshed.

“The Arab states’ loathing and fear of political Islam is so strong that it outweighs their allergy to Benjamin Netanyahu,” the prime minister of Israel, said Aaron David Miller, a scholar at the Wilson Center in Washington and a former Middle East negotiator under several presidents.

“I have never seen a situation like it, where you have so many Arab states acquiescing in the death and destruction in Gaza and the pummeling of Hamas,” he said. “The silence is deafening.”

Although Egypt is traditionally the key go-between in any talks with Hamas — deemed a terrorist group by the United States and Israel — the government in Cairo this time surprised Hamas by publicly proposing a cease-fire agreement that met most of Israel’s demands and none from the Palestinian group. Hamas was tarred as intransigent when it immediately rejected it, and Cairo has continued to insist that its proposal remains the starting point for any further discussions.[...]

But instead of becoming more isolated, Israel’s government has emerged for the moment as an unexpected beneficiary of the ensuing tumult, now tacitly supported by the leaders of the resurgent conservative order as an ally in their common fight against political Islam.

Egyptian officials have directly or implicitly blamed Hamas instead of Israel for Palestinian deaths in the fighting, even when, for example, United Nations schools have been hit by Israeli shells, something that occurred again on Wednesday.

Norman A. Bailey @ Globes: Surrounded by failure. The list of failed states in Israel's part of the world is growing, with Libya the weirdest.

The melancholy list of failed states in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is growing in number and intensity. There is no end in sight to the fratricidal bloodshed in Syria, which is threatening to destabilize Syria's neighbors.

Lebanon has no president, since the Lebanese parliament cannot elect one. Lebanon's surreal political system, dating from 1941, has morphed into two competing voting blocs, one including Sunni, Maronite, Armenian and Druze parties. The other includes the same ethno-religious mix except for Shiite parties instead of Sunni parties. All of this is largely beside the point, because, ever since the Israeli evacuation of southern Lebanon, Hezbollah has been the only meaningful power-broker in the country, and has absolute control of the south and of the Shiite section of Beirut. Elsewhere, various ethnic militias and the hapless national army clash, maneuver and skirmish.

Iraq is in imminent danger of disintegration. The recent election produced no majority for any party. The Shiite voting majority is divided among three parties that seem to have no intention of cooperating in forming a government. While this ritual dance is going on in Baghdad, Sunni insurgents linked to al-Qaida are attempting to detach Anbar Province in the West. Most significant, however, is the conflict between Baghdad and the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) in the north, with the central authorities withholding payments due to the Kurds and the Kurds beginning to ship petroleum directly from the oil fields they control to Europe via Turkey without reference to the central government. Loud noises about a declaration of independence by the KRG are being heard, and if that were to occur, not only would Iraq be dismembered, but very tough political decisions would have to be made by regional actors, including Israel.

But by far the weirdest display of state failure is taking place in Libya, where it would be fair to say that the country is no longer a failed state, it is simply no longer a state. [...]

On nous signale la création d'un nouveau blog "Shawarma News which monitors Antisemitism and Anti-Israeli news headlines from various Arabic websites". Voici trois exemples:

Jewish properties in Arab countries is an Israeli lieEgypt's former Ambassador to Israel, Mohammed Asem Ibrahim, said Jewish properties in Arab countries is a lie, they are false claims without any basis of truth, indicating that Israel does not own any properties in Arab countries and the issue has been settled, but Israel is promoting this issue every now and them to obstruct the current negotiations (Feb. 13, 2014)

If Arab blood is shed in Palestine, Jewish blood will necessarily be shod elsewhere in the Arab world".  En toute hypocrisie il ajoutait "in spite all the sincere efforts of the Governments concerned to prevent such reprisals". Il insiste: "Would the members be acting in a humanitarian way to place in certain and serious danger a million Jews [des pays arabes] simply in order to save a hundred thousant in Europe or to satisfy the Zionist dream?"

A la suite de cette publication l’agence de presse officielle saoudienne ,SPA, a diffusé le 1er juillet un communiqué énergique: "In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency, the source said that this report is categorically false, expressing surprise that such a newspaper publishes wrong information without verifying them from their source. The source pointed out that the positions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are always clear and undoubtedly publicized. The official source expressed hope that the influential newspaper would deny the story by itself to confirm its authenticity and reliability".

Israeli film disqualified from award - because ceremony is in Dubai

This is outrageousThe creators of the Israeli documentary "Israel: A Home Movie" were recently informed that their film has been dropped from an international competition for films based on archival footage, because the awards ceremony is to be held in the Arab emirate of Dubai.

The competition is being sponsored by the International Federation of Television Archives. According to the film's producer, Arik Bernstein, the organization's chairman informed him that because the ceremony is taking place in Dubai (which has no diplomatic relations with Israel) and the film deals with the history of Israel, it will not be shown at the event. In addition, the film’s creators cannot be hosted there and the film will be disqualified from winning a prize in the competition and not mentioned at the awards ceremony.

"Arab media push for US intervention in Syria, Gulf backed pan-Arab media leads media blitz; articles focus on shaming Obama into action using moral arguments."  Et comme si ce n'était pas assez: "Arab media forlornly blames West for Syria massacre - It is one thing to criticise Obama's muddled Syria policy. it's another for those who routinely slam American "meddling" to blame him for the massacre."

A new balance @ Globes par Norman Bailey

Out of the murk of the Middle East since the so-called "Arab Spring", a new strategic balance may be emerging that is not unfavorable for Israel. [...] there are signs that a new strategic balance may be emerging in the region. This realignment process is made up of various elements, some of which we have emphasized in previous columns:

- Withdrawal of the US military presence in Iraq and the pending withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan.
- European neglect of the region and general withdrawal within itself to try to reverse its long-standing economic and financial decline.
- Discovery and incipient production of vast reserves of natural gas in Israeli waters.
- Gradual emergence of an autonomous, if not independent, Kurdistan, marking the formation of a new political entity in the Middle East, covering twenty to forty million people, depending on whether it is limited to Iraqi and Syrian Kurdistan, or whether it will eventually cover also the Kurdish regions of Turkey and perhaps Iran.
- Increasing military, security and intelligence cooperation between Israel and the new military-controlled government in Egypt. Egyptian closure of the border with Gaza.
- Replacement of the Emir of Qatar by his son, due to Saudi pressure. The possibility of a visit by a Qatari prince to Israel to discuss economic and technological cooperation. Reports that the reopening of the Israeli trade office in Doha is imminent.
- Turkish preoccupation with domestic problems, especially growing opposition to the Erdogan government by Kemalist secularists, the Alevis, the Kurds and the Gulenists. End of Erdogan's dream of the creation of a neo- Ottoman overlordship in the region.
- Realization by Saudi Arabia and the gulf states that they cannot count on the United States to provide protective cover in case Iran succeeds in creating a nuclear arsenal, nor on a distant Russia, but paradoxically, on Israel and only on Israel.

Among other things, what this all means is that the Israeli-Palestinian talks so dear to the hearts of Obama and Kerry, are less than a sidshow. They are totally irrelevant to the important developments in the region. Put otherwise, no-one cares. It is pure political theater, and a farce at that.

Arab money is behind the shopping malls and is underpinning the Turkish current-account deficit" mais maintenant "the hot Arab money is moving out."

Peter HitchensDaily Mail

It is very fashionable to sneer at Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, and to sympathise with his (often equally dubious) opponents.  At the same time it is modish to make excuses for Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and to dismiss his opponents.  In the world of London think tanks, the self-important, frequently wrong and always bumptious Economist magazine and the BBC, Putin is bad and Erdogan is good.  Actually they are very similar, except that Erdogan locks up more journalists, is more intolerant of criticism and holds more political trials. I am not sure how to measure which of the two countries is more corrupt. It is a close-run thing.

But in one thing, Erdogan is far more worrying than Putin, who is a simple autocrat.  Erdogan is also a cunning and subtle Islamic fanatic, who knows he will get further if he pretends to be moderate, and in an unguarded moment said that democracy is ‘a tram you ride as far as you want to and then get off’.  I have been pointing this out for years, and so I was amused when at last the liberal elite were forced (reluctantly) to acknowledge it.  Erdogan’s unpleasant state machine showed its real face when citizens of Istanbul tried to save one of that city’s few remaining green spaces from tasteless redevelopment.

The stupid, thuggish and unprovoked gassing of one such citizen – the now-famous ‘Woman in the Red Dress’, Ceyda Sungur – should tell us all we need to know about the ‘mildly Islamist’ Turkish state – but only if we want to listen.  Once again, our outrage is selective. And selective outrage is always a fake.

Norman Stone @ Spectator

"[...] It was the proposal to put a shopping mall — Istanbul’s 93rd — over that small central park that ignited the present protests. The government overreacted absurdly, showering tear gas on to side streets and beating up harmless do-gooders. But all this concrete reflects something more: the Arab presence. Arabs have replaced Israelis in the tourist market, partly because Mr Erdogan has been very popular for adopting the Palestinian cause.  Arab money is behind the shopping malls and is underpinning the Turkish current-account deficit. The Saudis and Qatar seem to be mainly involved, and now they buy up land in Yalova, over the water from Istanbul, as well. [...]

In just 50 years, almost a million Jews, whose communities stretch back up to 3,000 years, have been 'ethnically cleansed' from 10 Arab countries. These refugees outnumber the Palestinian refugees two to one, but their narrative has all but been ignored. Unlike Palestinian refugees, they fled not war, but systematic persecution. Seen in this light, Israel, where some 50 percent of the Jewish population descend from these refugees and are now full citizens, is the legitimate expression of the self-determination of an oppressed indigenous, Middle Eastern people.  Source

Vrai? Faux?
A storm of massive proportions is brewing in the MidEast par Douglas Davis @ The Commentator

Zoological conspiracy theories (Arab-Israeli conflict)

Israel's supernatural rats chase away Jerusalem's Arabs, by Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook

The Palestinian Authority has come up with yet another wild accusation about Israel. Two PA newspapers - one directly controlled by the office of PA President Mahmoud Abbas - are accusing Israel of releasing rats with supernatural qualities to chase away the Arab residents of Jerusalem.

1) kidnapper le fils d'un voisin chrétien;
2) inviter le garçon à la synagogue;
3) trancher la gorge du garçon;
4) le vider de son sang qui est versé dans une bassine;
5) utiliser le sang ainsi recueilli pour confectionner le pain azyme de la Pâque juive;
